Course: Introduction to Creative Writing

Start with this course if you’ve never written a word, or use it to help refine skills you haven't used in a while. Learn the basic craft elements to apply to fiction, non-fiction, poetry, memoir, and start to explore marketing strategies.

Getting published isn’t just about writing – it’s about building a solid foundation of credibility and expertise. This workshop will help build your presence from the
ground up, with good planning, good tools, good materials and creative flair.

 p.m. Travel Writing - Ruth Kozak
Learn how to turn your travel adventures into marketable articles, creative non-fiction stories, interesting blogs or travel memoirs.  The workshop includes some 10 minute timed writings as well as writing instruction.

Canada Revenue Agency’s IT 504 sets out special tax rules for visual artists and writers. Eileen will help you understand  the murky world of reasonable expectation of profit, inventory, home office work space, meals and entertainment, gifts and donations in kind, what to deduct for self-employed writers and when a business is considered a separate business. www.taxdetective.ca

a.m. Alien Tracks to Magician Spells: Learn How to Write and Successfully Publish SF and Fantasy  – Nina Munteanu
Learn some essential tools of this genre such as world-building, research, plot approaches and how to generate and follow through with premise, idea and theme toward a publishable original work. Workshop will include use of examples, lists, discussion and writing. Bring a sample of your work and be prepared to discuss it. 

p.m. Building Characters Who Tell Their Own Stories – Lois Peterson
Using Q&A, free writing and list making, develop characters that come to life and dictate their own part in the story you want to tell. Come with stories in mind, or be prepared to see them arise during workshop activities.
